Would you like to have another distro (other than Fedora) to be distributed with PCQuest?

If yes, which one? Vote here

Couple of years back I have tried installing debian, but I could not start the xserver because of lack of hardware support. still a article says that debian supports the most range of hardware.

By reading many articles I found that debian is one of the oldest and a neat distribution with a text mode installer, wheras SUSE provides YAST installer and some cool softwares.

Also when you buy SUSE from a dealer you will get 5 or 7 installation CDs. Can you provide all CDs, does it cause liscensing probelms.

So if you distribute any other distros you must provide enough guide as you are providing to PCQlinux 2004, but it is difficult and highly impossible.
Also if you are providing another distro then the stand price of the magazine will be Rs 125 or more instead of 100.

I request you to provide good tutorials on linux. Making a linux newbie to a linux power user. give tutorials on the geeky stuff involved in linux.

Another thing, there are over 100 linux distribution world wide and the main difference between the distribution lies on the installing ease, maintanance and the software bundled with it.

SOOOOOO be happy with what you have, ONE linux distribution enough and let it be PCQlinux 2004.

Yes even I feel that we should continue with the Fedora Core and rather publish articles for newbies so that more and more ppl start to use Linux.

Hi,
Debian is difficult 4 novices - agreed but y not make PCQLinux 2005 a user friendly Debian based distro. cux u'd have the power of debian with the ease of use interface that i'm sure the PCQLinux team can provide.

The reason y most people choose Linux is we have lots of options.
When there so many distros out there, y stick with just one?

Gentoo is really good with its Portage installation system, Debian such a large package base.
Mandrake despite its publicised bankruptcy provides 3-4 ISOs for almost all its versions. MDK 10.0 is out its a great one.

I'm not talking about PCQLINUX 2005 here, PCQUEST shud give out its customised version once in a year. But y not give other distros one r two times a year.

All softwares for linux shud be tarballs or something common so it cud be installed in any distro just not in some RPM supported distro.

Spare a thought for users using or desiring different distros than Fedora/PCQLINUX , Give them Choice.

PCQUEST shud discuss with vendors & provide full versions LINUX-MAGAZINE gave out full SUSE 8.2 PRO as a DVD along with their Magazine a few months back. So I feel our very own PCQUEST can do wonders, only if it breaks its ties with RedHat & starts thinking more about all its customers.

IMHO Future is Open, so think with a open mind.

Thanks
Gokul

i think that new distro must wait till next year as pcq2004 is yet to be utilised and new bies to linux such as me first have to explore .if pcquest could provide some tutorials and guides for programers, and home users
such as php, mysql and to configure guides to home users .

Debian is cool and less bulky than Fedora.
Fedora does not have the punch provided by RedHat 9.
So let's move on to Debian - the coolest and hottest distro ever.
+ Its stability is much more appreciated by the community. :P

please include freebsd. it is more stable, speedy, secure than linux and is very easy to install software using ports compared to dependency hell with rpms.

As RedHat has gone Commercial they naturally will not be able to follow the GNU principles  therefore the best choice is stable and secure Linux like Debian which is GNU and provides fully automated installation. 8) . The familiarity with any Linux distro is generally good enough to provide easy switch over to another one in shortest possible time. The PCQ has EXCELLENT team which I am sure will be able to guide every new user to become a comfortable user of Linux.
:D

Somebody said "Gentoo"

Boss everyone does not have a broadband connection, I know it can be even installed w/o network/internet ,but, you will need a net conn. once you get going with it... :? emerge this, emerge that..

Gentoo is all about the latest and the bleeding edge s/w therefore you need to update it very frequently... coz thts the main philosophy behind Gentoo.

And also, it requires sufficient knowledge of linux and the underlying processes. Most ppl have troubles in even installtion vanilla distros like redhat/MDK.. leave aside such complex ones mate :P

---+

Humm.. ok coming to the main thing,

Slackware? You ppl left it out :?:
:) Although I have it :P so nothing to worry about.. ;)

I want to try SuSe too!

So my vote goes to SuSe, pls stay away from Live Distros

I got plenty of the knoppix ones lying around (thanks to LFY) which are of no use to me :o

Go in for a full Distro 2-3 CDs one, as I said SuSe is the best choice :)

See ya!

btw i use Slackware myself but here i will vote for SuSe ;)

SUSE 9.0 is a bit outdated with KDE 3.1.4 & Gnome is as gud as useless (just 2.2 when 2.6 is already out).

IMHO Mandrake 10 is the best, Kernel 2.6.3, KDE3.2, Gnome 2.4.
The DrakeControlcenter is great (better than YAST, I feel).
Unlike SUSE gives out 3(r 4) ISOs for free. Its a great one.

If its gonna be Debian, then it shud be DVD (for its package base CD's look like floppies).

one small clarification about GENTOO here, u can install Gentoo of a CD & install packages off a Package CD. Both ISOs are available for download.
So there's no need to  emerge this, emerge that... :P

But other than this I feel PCQ can carry a article on creating our own distro (no kidding, very serious). Just like the concept of Gentoo, if possible provide with necessary stuff on a DVD (when u plan to come out with one) r a CD.

I think this topic has been going on for a long time now, we need some kind of update from PCQ team. Come on Guys let us know what you feel.

Thanks

Ps: Just to repeate what my gud friend r rock_ya_baby-[TA] has said, NO LIVE CDs pls....

No....continue with Fedora Core-2.

Though there are a lot of distributions out there, there are really only a vrey few that are community driven - key among them being Gentoo, Slackware, Debian and (the new kid on the block) Fedora.

Slackware uses the tarball as its installation method of choice. Therefore while it ends up creating a very optimized system, the install and maintenance time goes against it. Gentoo has an automated package management system (aka Yum/Apt) over the base Slackware package managment method. But compiling every package at install time can make install a long process.

Suse & Mandrake have community editions...but they are stripped down versions of the main distro - therefore not real community editions in the Slackware/Debian/Fedora vein.

Considering ease of installation, ease of package management and strength of community support, Fedora still remains the best bet.

Debian scores high on ease of package management, but loses out due to its focus on high stability therefore making the package quite obsolete in the stable version. Debian also has extremely good community support. But IMHO, the overly cautious nature of Debian makes it more suitable for servers than for personal desktops.

Therefore, despite shortcomings in a few areas, Fedora remains an excellent choice for a wider variety of applications than any of the others.

So I will stick with Fedora Core-2.

:)
