Hi,

With every issue of PCQ, you get a set of CDs and sometimes there's a DVD. Do you have any suggestions for improving the content or the quality of what these contain? Some of them we're already working on, thanks to your continuing feedback (like naming of files on the PCQLive CD as mentioned on another thread). But if there is something new or innovative that you want to suggest, let us know on this thread....

Hi Sujay

I have some suggestions:

1. Give 2 CDs and a DVD every month.
2. Increase the Live CD video to more than 30 mins...its just 23 mins from the past couple of months.
3. Try to make the Live CD a VCD that can be playable on a VCD player too.
4. 2 CDs and a DVD every month
5. 2 CDs and a DVD every month

IMO, CD catalogs must be introduced. For reference, see my post http://forums.pcquest.com/forum/viewtop ... 6747#26747 and the one below that and you'll know what I'm talking abt. Moreover, you can see for yourself that this is the most urgent need for any of the PCQ subscriber ( http://forums.pcquest.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3435 ).

Good idea. But each cataloging s/w has its own database (for storing the catalog data). In what form do you suggest you want the catalog information? I have a few ideas:

a. Plain text OR XML (most portable, but not very searchable directly)
b. MS Access (only win32 and you will need something to use it - like MS Access, very queriable)
c. MS Excel workbook (maybe portable, if non-Excel specific things were used in it, queriable and you can do various other things with it as well)

..

Good going so far, keep the ideas flowing :)

There are some issues (not technical) in doing it

what about cd cases? It would be nice if PCQ itself provided jewel case covers for the CD and DVD with that months contents on front. Let it be in nero format or pdf?

Something I had suggested a long while back.
A Web service running on PCQuest.com that returns XML.

Queries can be:
1) Full Catalog
2) Particular Month
3) Particular Software

The XML can be rendered locally by using a (provided) XSLT file - either on each CD every month or downloadable from same site as the Web Service. This will solve the win32/linux issue of portability.

Also, if someone wants to, he can create an application (in .NET/Java etc.) to be able to use the Web service and do custom queries. If he wants he can make the app/code availble on these forums as well.

Won't its quality loose down?

For database XML is quite OK. We can have our custom databases in which those XML's will be updated every month and query as we like ...

thanks

IMO, this is not a very good idea. I mean there shall be something that can work offline...that is more preferable (acc. to me)

We are trying more to improve the QUALITY of software than QUANTITY. For instance, if we take up the "popular demand" here to carry more "free and opensource software", in order to fill up the space on the discs, the types of software will also be strained --- are you going to be happy if we carry 50-60 perfectly unheard of software from perfectly unheard of developers? Or would you prefer to get something you can actually make use of? We're going for the second... although when we find useful software that's free, possibly opensource and is of good quality (software+support+documentation, etc) then we do make an effort to carry it.

Its not about filling up spaces give open source software marked in linux/open source section ..... Previously u guys did it.... but afterwards the policy changed I think...
Please clearly tell in CD or DVD label the % of open source ...let it be atleast 20 % as pcquest wants its Win* buyers from news stalls to enjoy.
While we subscribers buy the magazine install pcq linux or any other linux just sit at home waiting for any new softwares while we get HA HA HA 90 % of Windows (*.exe)....
Guys please dont tell us to download ... India is still poor in net connectivity..

There are many open source useful alternatives...
PCQ gives google earth a .EXE file but there is a open source product of it....
Andf win amp .... etc.

Pavithran, that's why we have threads like this where you can point us to software you think we should carry. (Like I said on another thread, please dont keep demanding distros all the time...).

Give us the name and if possible a URL to where we can find it for a download (torrents, p2p excuse. only official homepages/download pages are accepted). And we'll see if we can carry it.

hi sujay

i also think CD Catalog programs are the most hot requirment.... XML is the better format for that... according to me...

for many days i am also looking for such a catalog program... i found some in the net but they does not full fil my requirments... i need a program which can catalog these things:

0. the CD number... which i will write on the CD itself
1. the CD name
2. the Name of the Software or Song names or what the CD Contains
3. a short description of the softwares along with the software name. why ?? it helps me to locate the Softwares or the songs easily... because the name only does not contain the whole information about the Software...
4. the softwares i found in the net misses to hold this information... they hold the CD version, date etc etc ...
5. i have arround 200+ CDs. and when i have to find any s/w it becomes a......
6. i also have to run some type of query to find the s/w... query on the CD no. , CD Description...
7. i tried to solve it by desiging a Access Database with the required fields... it also supports SQL query...
8. the new problem that comes... i have to index all the CD manually... the catalog programs does it by... simply reading the file information of the CDs....
9. but misses the Description part... which i need most...
10. so i made a VB program to use Clipboard.... and automatically coping the s/w names and Description...
11. but still it is a huge labour to Index them...

 i m looking for some new idea...

if u have any please give me....
thank u

Oh i forgot ur topic and started my one.... the CD Content...

i think.... i will think and tell u later... 8)
